Review: Race the darkness, by Abbie Roads

5 out of 5 riveting stars

I read it in less than 24 hrs.. That’s how good this book is!!!

I just simply couldn’t stop reading, even though I told myself to go to sleep at 2 am in the morning, the readaholic in me, could not let go!!!!

“When it came to her, his gonads had turned into nomads and taken off without him”

Xander Stone is one cold SOB that has been treated badly by life, no mother, an absent father, a missing stepmother and stepsister, an ahole for an uncle. He just has Roweena, the housekeeper, the only love he’s known since he was 7 years old. And to add insult to injury, he was struck by lighting that scared half his body, including his face. It also left him a little gift, He can tune in to the thought of others. That is the reason the CBI use him as a consultant on difficult cases.

The problem with hearing everyone’s thought, is the constant invasion of his brain, the constant pain and the addition of The Bastard, a violent voice that takes over him and erupts in rage.

He has heard a woman’s voice calling for help for so long, part of his hallucinations, that when it appears the only way to drown it is by drowning in alcohol.

Isleen has been captive for almost her whole life, being referred as The Dragon, and punished by beatings, starving and bleeding, and never knowing why. The only thing keeping her sane are her Grandmother, that sadly, her mind is slipping away, and the beautiful dreams about her saviour.

“It was up to her to figure out how to be happy- without Xander, without Alex or Matt o Gran. Her happiness was her responsibility. She was strong. She’d survived everything. She’d figure out a way to thrive” …Isleen

When The Bastard finally comes out and takes Xander on a road trip, little did he know he was about to come face to face with the body of the voice he’s beeing hearing for so long. And discover that she is the antidote to everything bad in his life. She brings him to life and soothers all his ailments. But this isn’t a one way street, Xander is the lifeline for Isleen, he brings her solace and peace, and brings her the safety she has always wanted.

He is the saviour she has been praying for. And has finally come to take her away. But of course the people who took her don’t want her out, in fact they want her dead.

“I am going to cry. I can’t seem to help it. But that doesn’t mean I can’t handle things or that I’m weak. It just means I need to feel things.”

Can Xander keep her safe, and can they become whole together?

The book is very well written, it’s like a Mexican Novela, Abbie Roads knows how to write and knows how to keep you interested in the book, she leaves you hanging on her every word, and she keeps you in suspense about what is going to happen.
The book has lots of twist and turns, and there was one shocker for me, and I’m guessing for anyone that reads the novel. It was a Shocker!!!

I really liked the book, and I definitely recommend it to anyone that likes a good book, with a HEA ending.
